Discover How To Use Your Transferable Skills

Reminder: Please email me to receive a complimentary assessment including a free 15 minute phone review of your resume to help you learn how to identify your transferable skills.

Last week, I began a discussion on Transferable Skills. The first step was to begin to identify those skills. The second step I’ll focus on today is about how to start looking in industries that are on the rise where you can apply those skills.

When making a career change you should first do a thorough self assessment to determine what career is most suitable for you and start researching what careers best utilizes your skills. Look for industries (such as health care) that are on the rise. To learn about various careers and what skills are required you can do the following:

• Gather occupational information. I use many methods for this but here are two websites that are useful to start with. www.census.gov/epcd/www/naics.html and www.Hoovers.com.
• Read job descriptions in help wanted ads to see which sparks interest and you can apply your skills to.
• Contact professional associations to learn more about the industry, training and resources.
