Focus on Flexibility

Focus on Flexibility...
As I returned home from vacation last Thursday evening to a storm that left us without power for three days, I was reminded of the importance of accepting, going with the flow and building our flexibility muscles.

A question from a client provided a timely reminder for us all to be willing to look for new opportunities (as I got a jump start on my spring cleaning as I emptied out my refrigerator and freezer)! Here’s hoping it’s a useful reminder to you too.

Q: I’ve recently been laid off. What else am I reasonably qualified to do if I want or need to change professional career paths?

A: Focus on Your Value & Skill Set, NOT Your Industry Expertise … then Look at In-Demand Industries.

There are two parts to this tip. One is to focus on your transferable skills and the other is to look in industries that are on the rise. Let’s talk first about transferable skills.

As you begin your job search, it is important that you know your own qualifications. Over the years you have developed many skills from coursework, jobs and your total life experiences. If you've led groups, developed programs and managed projects, you've used skills which are not limited to any one discipline or knowledge area but are transferable to many occupations. A prospective employer will want to know how you will be able to apply the skills you have learned to their work environment.

Start with a TRANSFERABLE SKILLS ASSESSMENT to help you identify the experience, skills and knowledge you will bring with you to any position. This is the first step to take before you begin writing your resume and applying to positions. By gaining clarity on what you bring to the market, creating focused resumes, and staying open and flexible to new industries you may discover opportunities in areas you may not have ever imagined!
