Next Right Step for Easy Interview Follow Up

Q & A of the week:
Thank you for submitting your questions! The most often asked question this week was about how/when to follow up with potential employers. This is a common and sometimes confusing topic worth reviewing.

Q: After my interview last week, I was told that they’d be making a decision about second round interviews by Tuesday. It’s Wednesday, and I haven’t heard back yet. Is it ok for me to call them?

A: Yes! It’s perfectly acceptable and alright to call the company to check on the status since you were given a specific date to expect a callback.

In this case, he called, and the company said they had been trying to reach him but for some reason was not able to get through his phone or email! YES indeed they wanted to arrange a 2nd interview! If he hadn’t followed up, he would have likely missed out on this opportunity and never know why.

So… always – at the end of your interview, ask what the company’s “next steps” are and what their time line is. It’s also a good idea to ask your interviewer what their preferred way is for you to follow up (phone or email?). They will tell you. In this way, you are not only confirming your interest but also creating an opportunity for you to take the Next Right Step!
